Robbie Deans' tips for a healthier you

6th September 2011

Many of us wish we had healthier diet and lifestyle habits, but implementing and sticking to changes can be tough. When we asked the advice of Robbie Deans, coach of Australia's International Rugby Union team, the Wallabies, he suggested a three-pronged attack.

1. Determine your goal

“First, decide what your objective is”, says Robbie. “Without knowing where you’re headed and why, you’ll lose focus.”

Robbie’s tip: Choose a goal that’s specific, measurable, and motivating. An example might be “I’m going to weigh a healthy 68 kilograms and feel fabulous at Sam’s wedding.”

2. Get a game plan

Identifying the appropriate steps to take can be daunting if you don’t understand the principles involved in developing an effective exercise regime or a nutritionally sound eating plan.

“That’s why I’ve helped Thompson’s develop six game plans that help address people’s most common health concerns,” Robbie explains. “They’re all free, and you’ll find them www.thomsonsgameplan.com.au .”

Robbie’s tip: Log on to  www.thomsonsgameplan.com.au  to access specific diet and exercise plans to help you reach your target.

3. Take action and surround yourself with support

No amount of goal setting and planning matters if you don’t actually take action though.

“Only you can do that,” acknowledges Robbie, “but it helps to have others around to give you motivation and advice when the going gets tough – and equally importantly, to help you celebrate your wins.

Robbie’s tip: “I’ve recorded some inspiring coaching tips to help you stay fired up. You’ll find them, along with access to an online naturopath and a friendly community of people who are on a similar journey to your own, at  www.thomsonsgameplan.com.au.
